Natal: sukacita bagi yang terhilang(1)

kandang domba[en]In the middle of the joy of Christmas celebration, we should ask about the genuine purpose of the Christmas itself. Yes, that baby Jesus couldn’t answer on that time, but when He started His ministry on this earth, He showed us that “the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”[1]

Do you remember this story?

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men came from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is He who is born king of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east and have come to worship Him. But when Herod the king heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judea. For so it is written by the prophet, “And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the governors of Judah. For out of you shall come a Governor who shall rule My people Israel.” Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, inquired of them exactly what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child. And when you have found him, bring me word again so that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed. And lo, the star which they saw in the east went before them until it came and stood over where the child was. And seeing the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And coming into the house, they saw the child with Mary His mother. And they fell down and worshiped Him. And opening their treasures, they presented gifts to Him, gold and frankincense and myrrh.[2].

Can you imagine how great their joy so that they opened their treasures and presented gifts to Him? I’m still amazed by the way God call His people. These wise men came from a place that some scholar believed as Babylonia, a place of science and technology that more advance than other country on that time. Some of their scientist practiced what we call today as astrology. So how God would call them? Off course using what they learned every day, the star. From billion and billion stars, God called them using one unique star – the one they called “His star”[3].

So they started their long journey – perhaps for about two years[4] – in one purpose, to worship Him. The Bible than noted that “seeing the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy”.[5]

I rejoiced with exceedingly great joy in this Christmas, because I know that He has come to seek me and to save me that which was lost.[/en]
